Developed in collaboration with Doclisboa, .doc program will take place in Passos Manuel, in Porto, on September 12, 13 and 25, to present three documentaries that stood out in the programming of both festivals in recent years.
The first screening features “Henry Fonda for President”, by Alexander Horwath, a foreign and fascinating look at the life, work, and country of one of Hollywood’s greatest actors. A reserved man, who believed he had “no good answers to anything,” becomes the unlikely engine of a parallel story. His voice, recorded in the last interview he gave in 1981, and his on-screen avatars guide us through the past and present of America—from the village of Fonda to the Pacific, through the Midwest; from 1651 to the 1980s and the presidency of another actor. Many places, times, and characters shape an invisible republic—the United States of Fonda.
On September 13, there is an opportunity to revisit “The Day I Met You”, by André Novais Oliveira, a witty and transgressive chronicle of a Brazil rarely portrayed. Zeca always does everything the same way. He tries to get up early to catch the bus and, an hour and a half later, arrive at the neighboring town’s school, where he works as a librarian. Getting out of bed is becoming increasingly difficult. Something is stopping him from keeping this daily routine. One day, Zeca meets Luisa. With remarkable performances by Grace Passô and Renato Novaes, this is an exuberant film, full of humanity, humility, and wonder amidst the exhaustion of life.
Closing the cycle on September 25 is “E.1027 – Eileen Gray and the House by the Sea”, one of the standout films of the 2024 edition of PPD. A story about the power of female expression and men’s desire to control it, the film is guided by the work of Irish designer Eileen Gray and what is considered her masterpiece: E.1027, a discreet yet avant-garde house built on the Côte d'Azur.
