World premiered in the Cinema Falado Competition of the 2023 edition of Porto/Post/Doc, the film “Lindo”, the debut feature by Margarida Gramaxo, will have its commercial release in Portuguese cinemas on July 10, distributed by Risi Film.
Shot on Príncipe Island, in São Tomé and Príncipe, “Lindo” traces the transformative journey of Manuel da Graça — known to all as Lindo — who, after more than two decades hunting sea turtles, decides to abandon this practice and dedicate himself to protecting these animals. This decision becomes the starting point for a broader reflection on the social, economic and environmental transformations affecting the island, shaped both by its colonial past and by current dynamics of foreign investment and environmental conservation programmes.
With a predominantly observational approach and remarkable visual work by Hugo Azevedo (aip), the film unfolds as a meditation on the balance between human life and nature, as well as the contradictory impacts of modernisation and environmental protection in a fragile and vulnerable economy. Margarida Gramaxo’s direction is marked by a careful, ethical and sensitive gaze, informed by a long-term relationship with the island and a refusal of simplistic or exotic representations.
Following its world premiere at Porto/Post/Doc, “Lindo” was selected for several national and international festivals, having received the Best Film Award at the Festival Periferias, the Audience Award for Best Documentary at FESTin, and the AIP Award for Best Cinematography (Documentary). It was also shown at festivals such as Cine-Eco, FEST – New Directors | New Films Festival and Ciné-ONU, among others.
