Fictions of the Real at Dokufest

by Porto/Post/Doc / 31 07 2018

In 2018, Porto/Post/Doc presents a program dedicated to the Fictions of the Real at the Dokufest - International Documentary and Short Film Festival. The theme, which will cover several sections and retrospectives of the festival - which runs from November 24 to December 2 - addresses the intersection between fiction and documentary, a model that has been dominant in the history of Portuguese cinema.

For this reason, Porto/Post/Doc is promoting, together with a network of international festivals, the "Fictions of the Real in Portuguese Cinema" program. This program - which includes three feature films and three short films - is intended to be a micro-story of our cinema and its relation to reality. Therefore, two seminal films from the history of Portuguese cinema will be screened: "The Green Yers" by Paulo Rocha (1963), a striking moment in the emergence of the new Portuguese cinema; and "Trás-os-Montes", the remarkable film by António Reis and Margarida Cordeiro. The two films will be screened in restored digital copies, in association with the Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema.

The program also includes a bridge with contemporary Portuguese cinema, featuring three authors from the Geração Curtas who became the biggest names in our cinema: "Christmas Inventory" (2000), by Miguel Gomes; "China, China" (2007), by João Pedro Rodrigues and João Rui Guerra da Mata; and "Voodoo" (2010), by Sandro Aguilar. To conclude the program we include the most recent critical success of Portuguese cinema: "The Tree" (2018), by André Gil Mata, premiered at the Berlinale and in which the author affirms himself as one of the new voices of our cinema.

From Fictions of the Real, the main objective of this program is to promote Portuguese cinema, between its history and the contemporary moment, in several international festivals. Dokufest, held in Kosovo from 3 to 11 August, will be the first festival of this tour. Sérgio Gomes, artistic director of Porto/Post/Doc, will be in Kosovo to present this program, but also to join the jury of the competition International Dox.

The kosovar festival will also project other Portuguese productions: "Extinção", by Salomé Lamas (International Dox Section); and "Farpões Baldios", by Marta Mateus (International Shorts Section).

The presence of the program "Fictions of the Real in Portuguese Cinema" in Kosovo is supported by Short Film Agency, the Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema and C.R.I.M. Produções.
