We, the Revolution is the title of a thematic programme dedicated to the work of Hungarian filmmakers Márta Mészáros and Miklós Jancsó that will be part of this year's Porto/Post/Doc programme. Taking place between the 16th and 26th of November in Porto, the festival selected six films that dive into a work that has withstood time and which, seen at the present moment, seems even more relevant. Six films united by the idea of ​​revolution, which serve as a counterpoint to a certain conservatism reigning in contemporary European culture and which foreshadow the step back symbolized by the political events that, meanwhile, erupted in the center of Europe.

In the visual poetry that characterizes them and in the questions that each of the films raises, Márta Mészáros and Miklós Jancsó propose a reflection on the concepts of individual freedom and the freedom of a people, on the legitimacy (and legitimation) of the occupation of a country and about female emancipation, all themes that are stepped into the public agenda, in the 21st century. A reflexion done with intellectual honesty and using the resources of the cinematographic language that apply virtuosity to the power of emotions and to historical and political thought: Márta Mészáros with her close-up shots of faces and the intimate use of black and white; Miklós Jancsó with the sequence shots that have become his trademark and gained their place within the history of cinema.

In this cycle, which embraces the paradoxical force of the ideas of revolution, we talk about the various revolutions in which Hungary was involved since the end of the 19th century, up to the most personal revolutions (from feminism to the struggle for freedom and respect for the identity of a country), of which Márta Mészáros' films are an example. A programme that aims to shed new light on the work of two authors who, despite the relevance of their work, are still hazy figures of European cinema and largely unknown to the general public.
