In April, Há Filmes na Baixa! has several proposals of good cinema. During this month, the cycle traverses different stories and memories, showing a diversity of films. Peter Fischli & David Weiss, typical provocateurs and cultivators of the idea of the "artist's film", use cinema and video as support of their creative activity. From 6th to 12th of April, Porto/Post/Doc will present its first commercial premiere, with a one-week presentation of the documentary Paula Rego, Stories & Secrets, by her son Nick Willing. Finally, on April 19th, Calabria, the winner of the last DocLisboa, Calabria, will be screened. This is a film premiere in Porto and the beginning of a series of sessions in collaboration with DocLisboa.
Peter Fischli & David Weiss formed one of the most celebrated pairs of contemporary art. Cinema, for them, was a means of privileged expression. Há Filmes na Baixa! will screen three of their most important work. One of them is The way things go, the Citizen Kane of DIY, in which a series of utensils are removed from their traditional functions and put to work together. It inspired - with controversy - another type of works, like an advertisement that Honda presented in 2003 and by which it was accused of plagiarism. In the next two films, the artists, dressed in rented animal clothes, established their characters "rat" and "bear" in a series of adventures that take them from a highway from Los Angeles to the Swiss Alps. Paula Rego, Stories & Secrets is a heartfelt tribute to her by son Nick Willing, entering into the intimacy of the artist, revealing her obsessions and the transformation of her art through the ages. It is a rare portrait of Paula Rego, from family films and archival material. Calabria, by Pierre-François Sauter, is a road movie, a trip of two men and a deceased, with the particularity of involving a Portuguese-emigrant.
In 2017, we will continue to propose cinema cycles, at the monthly rate, providing hypotheses for the discovery of less known cinematographies or films that deserve new visibility. These cycles, which will have a thematic coherence, will extend the activity of Porto/Post/Doc, the festival that takes place at the end of November.
