D'est is a documentary film in which Chantal Akerman meditates on the state of Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union. A portrait of the transformations of everyday life in Eastern countries, in which the director embarks on a journey from the German border to Russia, and from the end of summer to the deepest winter. A road movie in which the images speak for themselves through long hypnotic travellings. Buildings, landscapes, snow and twilight make up a captivating poem in which anonymous faces seem to be despondently awaiting the future.
