In The Beguiled, the more or less distant rattle of war mixes with the sighs, with the moans of pain and pleasure of the characters. Set in the nineteenth century, in the middle of the American Civil War, the film takes place almost inside the four walls of an isolated mansion that serves as an internship for five teenagers and their two preceptors. The apparent calm and balance of this exclusively female microcosm will be challenged when they accept to care for a severely injured Union Soldier on one leg. For Sofia Coppola, however, the concrete historical references seem to be of little importance. The director returns here to explore the disruptive effect of desire and the ambiguity of the seduction experience where predator and prey are confused. (Catarina Maia)
