Malek Bensmaïl (1966) was awarded several awards for his documentaries, notably Aliénations (2004) and La Chine est encore loin (2008). In Contre-pouvoirs, Malek exposes who holds the place of democratic counter-power in Algeria: the press. To do so, he films the newspaper El Watan, one of the most influential newspapers in Algeria, during the presidential campaign in which Abdelaziz Bouteflika was fighting for a fourth term. The documentary recounts the life of the newsroom, the conversations and the discussions among journalists, where the history of Algeria was discussed, from the colonial period to the "black decade" of the 1990s, during which 120 journalists were murdered. During the talks, the problem of language is discussed, since the newspaper is written in French, the language of the former colonizer which is also the language of inscription in Algerian modernity, as well as issues of freedom of expression and places of counter-power in Argelia.
