More than a documentary on the Stooges, Gimme Danger is born as a film created by an author who knows the history of cinema and rock extremely well: Jim Jarmusch, who returns to documentaries after Year of the Horse, from 1997, about Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Built as a story told by James Osterberg himself, from his book I want more, and approaching the director’s won style in a natural way, with its existential humour, the film’s major strength comes from the fact that this history of the Stooges portrays mainly a tremendously charismatic musician, the omnipresent Iggy, who is electrifying in the film. Jarmusch presents himself as a diehard admirer of Iggy’s, leaving the other members of the band in the background, portraying all his exaggerations and failures with his usual humour. We leave on a journey where the band is shown within the context of their times, but above all as the object of tribute of what it represents to several generations of musicians, such as the Sex Pistols, the White Stripes or the Ramones, for whom the Stooges are a timeless and revolutionary band. Gimme Danger is an accomplished portrayal in a film that will go down in history as a unique testimony, and the most important to date, on the band. (Dario Oliveira)
