Between the unmistakeable finger picking of Rui Carvalho (Filho da Mãe) and the echoes of church music, Miguel Filgueiras sets out to explore the corners of the semi-ruined monastery of Santo André, in Rendufe. The bird’s accompanying chirping, the children who play in the cloisters and the choir singing sessions transport us immediately to that imaginary world of seclusion, par excellence, making a counterpoint to the deafening racket of the café that starts the film. Rui escapes and takes us with him. With his guitar in hand, he will be the guide in the monastery, occupying several rooms with one goal: to write and record. Here there is no talk about music, the music is heard, and though it we visit that imposing and ghostly space, once consumed by flames. “Why did it burn down?”, someone asks. (AJM)
