A voiceover tells an old story: that of the “old believers,” a group of Russian Orthodox who in the seventeenth century refused the reforms of the Russian Church. These believers, maintaining their traditions, were pushed into various territories (China, Brazil, United States). A group of them settled in the Danube Delta, a region of present-day Romania. Old Believers follows this group, from their descendants, looking at their daily lives and their rituals. Jana Sevcíková's films are heirs of a committed ethnographic cinema – the director has spent five years with this community – but transforming them into approaches ranging from the direct testimony of the portrayed people to a poetic language, evident in her look at the nature that involves the places of this society. This poetry is enhanced by the use of sound (after the screening, the bells ringing in the churches still tinkle in the ears) and by the beautiful cinematography that transfigure the film into a multiple sensory experience. Finally, we enter into the soul of these people. (Daniel Ribas)
