For many years, visiting the Nepalese temple of Manakamana, built during the XVII century, implied a long journey along the mountain, an ordeal that could accentuate the spiritual dimension of the trip. With the building of the cable car the last kilometres of the path can be travelled in less than 10 minutes. Shot in 16 mm, the documentary Manakamana circumscribes its attention to that cable car, where musicians, tourists, grandfather and grandsons and babblers pass by. In the film, many times, we go up and down the mountain in a dozen of steady shots and depending on whom is traveling with us, feeling empathy and discomfort, just like when we are forced to share an exiguous space with strangers. Thought an ingenious stratagem of editing, the change of our trip partners, in the two platforms, it’s so subtle that it appears to come out as a witchcraft blow, in which we are the insider witness.
