What can the frozen winter of the Mongolian mountains bring? Death. Thus starts and ends Zud, the circular narrative of which focuses on the difficult life of Sukhbat, an eleven year old boy, and his family. The extreme weather conditions exterminate the cattle which, on that arid mountain, is the only means of subsistence. We see the lost dreams of childhood – going to school becomes a mirage – being foregone in favour of rural work and we also look at all the hope invested on a single horse, given by his father, which Sukhbat trains day in and day out. Zud then becomes a paradoxal purity of a race that decides lives, juxtaposed with the complexity of the family tension that emanates from it. Playing with the scale of shots, the polish director Marta Minorowicz brings us the infinitude of nature, accompanied by a deafening wind which won’t cease to blow loudly, and very close. (Alexandra João Martins)
