From archive photographic images, correspondence, drawings and objects, Miranda Pennell builds a film that expands the visual possibilities of creating cinema, beyond its most orthodox ways. She does it resorting to elderly composition techniques that remount to experimental cinema and visual arts. For almost an hour of image the artist channels a story through these different resources, both from her family archive and the Anglo Iranian Oil Company’s (property of the actual British Petroleum, BP) one. This initially personal story thrives from an investigation about the connections between her family and the British oil company on the Middle East, evolving to a much more universal film approaching the colonial and imperial past. As the director said herself: “The Host is a film product of personal assay about the stories we tell about ourselves and others, the facts and fictions that we live from and their consequences”.
