A revealing documentary that, continuing Andersen’s namesake essay in 1985, examines the “Hollywood Blacklist” (made by the “House Un-American Activities Committee”), which circulated inside the studios during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s and aroused suspicions about certain filmmakers and screenwriters and their connections to the communist party. A series of interviews with some of the names involved in this process – contextualized by excerpts from 53 films that have built emancipatory proposals addressing issues such as class, gender, race or war – show which models this persecution instituted and how the censorship was imposed by a dominant Hollywood elite, which was aware and therefore afraid of the possibilities of cinema as a vehicle for new political ideas. Red Hollywood is a critical analysis of the history of American cinema. (Sabrina D. Marques)
